Welcome
to the North West Branch of the Landscape Institute's Website
The
Landscape Institute is the Chartered Institute in the UK for
Landscape Architects, incorporating Designers, Managers and
Scientists.
Designers identify and solve problems using design techniques
based on an understanding of the external environment, knowledge
of the functional and aesthetic characteristics of landscape
materials, organisation of elements, spaces and activities.
Managers are concerned with the long term care and development
of new and existing landscape.
Scientists are specialists in the physical and biological aspects
of landscape design and management. This
site aims to provide a guide to the Branch's role in the north
west.
What

into regions and all members residing within their region automatically
become members of the Branch. Current membership is approximately

Pennines in the east, across to the Welsh border and as far north
as Cumbria.

What do we do?
The branch is responsible for:
· Organising events
These range from technical talks to site visits and are usually
free where possible. Non members are welcome but a nominal fee
may be charged.
· Commenting on regional policies, structure and local
plans etc
· Providing a forum for debate on landscape issues
· Education
Providing an educational link with the Manchester Metropolitan
University landscape design course students and to schools in
the region.
Communication
Every quarter a newsletter is published and mailed to all members,
to each branch and similar professional bodies in the northwest.
Awards
Since 2001 the Branch has sponsored an award for the best final
year student at the University, awarded in June at the annual
degree show. The selection, by a jury of local eminent business
people either connected to the profession or with an interest,
is made based on a number of ideas including the use of media,
graphic presentation and communication of ideas. This year the
award was extended to the third year students. The prize is a
£50 book token for the RIBA bookshop.
How
are we funded?
The Branch receives an annual sum of money from the secretariat
in London based upon the number of members. This is used to cover
such things as membership to the CUBE gallery in Manchester, which
allows the Branch to hold exhibitions and hence raise the profile
of the profession. However, sponsorship is sought to cover e.g.
publication of the newsletter, to pay for speakers and hire costs
of venues.
